FAQ’s

  1. What is the Crown Care Collective? The Crown Care Collective is our signature program offering free haircuts and basic styling services to students throughout the school year. It is designed to remove barriers and build self-esteem by helping students show up to school feeling fresh, focused and proud.

  2. Who is eligible for the services? Students (typically school-age youth) from under-resourced or under-privileged communities are eligible. The program is meant to serve youth who may face financial or access barriers to regular grooming services.

  3. What types of services are offered? The program includes free haircuts and basic styling services. These services are provided by licensed professionals and volunteers at pop-up events and partner locations.

  4. When and where do services happen? Services are provided throughout the school year via pop-up events and partner locations. (For example: at community events, partner sites, or specific program days.)

  5. Do I need to register in advance? Registration is encouraged to help us plan ahead and make sure we have enough supplies and stylists for everyone. While we can’t guarantee a spot for every student, signing up lets us contact you first when appointments open.

  6. Is there a cost for the services? No — services under the Crown Care Collective are offered free of charge to eligible students. The program is designed to remove financial barriers.

  7. What happens during a pop-up event? During the event students receive a haircut or basic styling by licensed professionals/volunteers. The environment is welcoming, supportive, and meant to build confidence and self-esteem. Students also might interact with mentors or peer-leaders, depending on the event.

  8. Are parents/guardians required to accompany students? Yes/Usually – Parents or guardians should bring the student and complete any necessary consent forms or registration details ahead of time (or onsite if permitted). This ensures we have permission for services and are aware of any special needs.

  9. What should students bring or how should they prepare? •Arrive a little early to check in. • Bring the registration confirmation (if applicable). • Communicate any health/allergy concerns or styling preferences at check-in. • Be ready to show school ID or verification of age/eligibility (if required).

  10. Can students choose their hairstyle or talk about their desired look? Yes — part of the styling appointment is to empower the student, so professionals will consult and work with the student’s preferences, within the scope of basic cuts and styling. If very complex styling is requested, additional cost or referral might apply (outside the free program).

  11. What happens if an event is full or registration closes early? If an event is full, the student may be placed on a wait-list for the next available pop-up. We recommend registering early as space is limited and services are provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

  12. Can I volunteer or become a partner for this program? Absolutely — We welcome licensed stylists, barbers, volunteers, and community partners to support registration, set-up, supply distribution, or mentorship activities.

  13. How can I donate supplies or support the program? The program is 100% supported by community donations and partners. You may donate hair-care supplies, tools (combs, clips, styling aids), or make financial contributions. Every donation helps serve more students.

  14. How does this program tie into other offerings of Kidz on the BLOK? The Crown Care Collective complements our leadership, self-esteem and hair-care education programs (for example: Beauty Is Organic, My Hair My Crown, Protect Your Crown). It is part of our broader mission to help youth look good, feel good and ultimately do good.

  15. How can I get more information or ask a specific question not covered here? You can contact us via the “Contact” page on the Kidz on the BLOK website, or email the program coordinator. (You may also check for the “Request More Info” link on the program page.)
